If you share our enthusiasm for the stories, poems and memoirs on this site, as well as our conviction that authors should be paid for their work, we would very much appreciate your supporting us with a donation. Details here.

The collage for the header on this website was designed by Amanda Yskamp.

With our current issue Displacement, we have published 51 online chapbooks — 26 fiction, 6 CNF/memoir and 5 poetry collections, each featuring one author — and 14 anthologies by multiple authors. The anthologies may also be downloaded as pdfs. Most of the collections are available as epubs.

We are pleased and proud to showcase diverse and talented writers, whether they be emerging newbies or old hands with a long list of publishing credits. We read submissions blind, always on the alert for genuinely excellent writing. ALL AUTHORS ARE PAID and have been since 2010 when this journal opened to submissions.

Beginning In 2024, we will be publishing micro fiction and CNF (creative nonfiction) periodically. See Submissions page for guidelines.

We nominated work by three authors for a 2024 Pushcart award, two from our 2023 anthology Salvaged:
    Joyce Hinnefeld’s essay “Imperfect Machines
Lita Kurth’s story “The Peasant Child
And one from our 2023 fiction collection, The Essential Worker:
Jane Turner Goldsmith’s story “Shiny Shoes

SUBMISSIONS for our 2024 fiction and nonfiction echapbooks (issues 52 and 53) open on May 1. See Submissions page for guidelines.

We have two major reading periods each year, usually January-February and May to mid-July. Plus in 2024 we're adding reading periods for micro-prose, starting in August; the rest TBD.

Previously published echapbooks may be read in the ARCHIVES or ordered as Kindle or Smashwords ebooks. We are building a list of e-pubs in our e-STORE that can be added to your library. Older issues and the annual anthologies are not available as ebooks but as downloadable pdf files.

In many (though not all) issues, hyperlinks to photos, videos, background articles, maps, poetry and artwork add new dimensions to the online reading experience.

Please visit the site again and often. We will be offering our readers a wide variety of original, high quality writing in the years to come.
