Taking off His Ring, Part Two

She massages her ring finger with oily hand cream,
promises herself she’s just bathing her ring, placing it
afloat in a sink of warm water.

Every night for twelve weeks.
She studies the ring’s imprint on her,
the circle of tenderized skin underneath, a pallor.

Not ready yet
for the lacquer box

where she’s placed Edgar’s returned ring.
